Breakout charles bronson3/4/2024 ![]() ![]() With unscrupulous Wagner and his ruthless fix-it man Cable (Paul Mantee) shutting down any attempt by Jay's wife Ann (Jill Ireland) to broker his release, Ann turns to shady local Brownsville pilot Nick Colton (Bronson) and his buddy Hawk (Randy Quaid). How brutal? The warden wears a general's uniform and is played by chief WILD BUNCH villain Emilio Fernandez. Indeed, if JAWS was sold out, BREAKOUT would've been a terrific second option for moviegoers looking for a great time.Ĭorrupt Texas shipping magnate Harris Wagner (John Huston) has his whistleblower grandson Jay (Robert Duvall) framed for a murder just south of the border and given a 28-year sentence in a brutal Mexican prison. Released by Columbia on May 22, 1975, BREAKOUT was one of the first movies to open in the nationwide "saturation booking"-style rollout that would become industry standard after the blockbuster success of JAWS a month later. It's unusual for Bronson, at least in his post-DEATH WISH headlining era, in that it's like a prototypical slam-bang, crowd-pleasing summer action movie that Jerry Bruckheimer would be cranking out a couple decades later, with an ensemble cast where everybody gets to shine (Bronson doesn't even appear until 20 minutes in). For whatever reason, this is a Charles Bronson outing that I never got around to until now, and man, I wish I'd seen it sooner.
